Crap-asstrophotography

I’ve just started and I seriously (I mean seriously) suck at it. This is the Orion Nebula:

So, let me explain. I’m trying to use image stacking, and so I’m using my Rebel T1i and taking 30 second exposures at 1600 ISO. This is one of those shitty exposures.

Great and fine and I think I could take a beautiful composite photo if it weren’t for the fact I realized tonight the importance of confirming things through the camera’s preview function. I looked through my 40 mm eyepiece, swapped out the camera, and then everything shifted to the lower right as part of the shuffle.

The problem is when I fiddle with the camera to get to the preview, I bump stuff. I have a remote (see below), but it’s lacking in functionality, and I think generally sucks.

Also: I’m also seriously concerned about the streaking. Is this because the telescope isn’t tracking or is it because the remote I have (no-named random thing I can’t remember buying) is a piece of shit so I had to reach up and snap a photo by touching (bumping?) the camera a couple of times.

I think I have a serious hardware problem.

What gives me hope is that I honestly picked up color in the nebula. Yes, it’s a seething pile of shit photo. But I got color from the Orion Nebula which means the potential is there.
